My Month in Travel Hacking- February 2019

February came and went in the blink of an eye. It was a relatively quiet month in the world of travel hacking. The biggest news would probably be the completion of the Marriott & SPG merger and creation of Marriott Bonvoy. I am not sure what I think of the program, but i am interested to see the direction Marriott takes it.

Every month I like to do a review new cards I applied for, points earned and redeemed, and what cards I have my eyes on next. I like to do this in order to give you a better idea of what a typical month looks like for someone like myself and what is possible with travel hacking. Let’s check out my report for the month of February!

Citi AA Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard

My one and only new card for the month was the Citi AAdvantage Platinum World Elite Mastercard. I plan racking up as many AA miles as possible and Citi cards are the ideal way to do so. This card doesn’t have much to offer outside of the sign-up bonus, which is 50k AA miles after $2.5k spend in the first 90 days. The only benefit of this card worth mentioning is the first checked bag free for you and up to four people traveling with you on American Airlines flights.

I received the sign-up bonus from my SPG Luxury card of 125k Marriott points, which I plan on using in the very near future on a trip to San Francisco.

I also received the 50k Membership Rewards points sign-up bonus from the Amex Gold Card. I am a huge fan of the Gold Card, and it is my current daily driver for cards until my new Citi card comes in the mail. The 4x points at restaurants and grocery stores is hard to beat.

San Francisco St. Regis

As I just mentioned, I am planning on taking a trip to San Francisco for my birthday in April, and will be using 120k points for two night at the St. Regis. It was tough to choose between the San Fran Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis, but I heard so many good things about the St. Regis that I had to give it a shot. I will certainly be doing a review of the hotel in April, so stay tuned to the blog for that.

Because I plan on attending the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo with my girlfriend next summer, I am trying to earn a few more Amex MR points for 2 ANA F seats. That will require booking the flight about a year in advance, so I plan on signing up for another American Express Platinum card, most likely the Charles Schwab or Ameriprise versions.

I would not recommend applying for multiple Amex Platinum cards unless you are active duty military, because the annual fee is so high ($550). But if you are in the military like myself, that means double the perks without having to worry about the annual fees.

That is my report for the month of February. I am hoping for a more lucrative March in terms of points and new cards. How did your month go? What new cards and points did you earn in February? Leave a comment down below and let me know!
